Nitrous oxide is a mild sedative inhaled through a small nose mask during treatment. It produces a calm, relaxed feeling while you remain fully conscious and responsive. The effects wear off within minutes after the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home.
For patients with more significant dental anxiety or those undergoing longer procedures, oral conscious sedation offers deeper relaxation. You take a prescribed medication before your appointment and remain awake but deeply relaxed throughout the procedure. You'll need someone to drive you home.
No. With both nitrous and oral sedation, you remain awake and can respond to questions. You'll simply feel relaxed and may not remember much of the procedure afterward.
